Born into one of Rome's most storied bloodlines, Icilia Umbra Divinia carries the weight of generations upon her shoulders. Through her veins runs the legacy of the Aemilianus, the legendary house descended from Scipio Africanus, whose victories over Carthage brought the Punic Wars to their end. Yet history was unkind to the line. Generation after generation produced only daughters, leaving proud Roman patriarchs without a traditional male heir.

When Noctius Umbria Lucius, Divinia's grandfather, found himself in the same position, he refused to allow centuries of heritage to disappear beneath Roman custom. Defying convention, he proclaimed his eldest granddaughter the rightful heir, establishing House Umbria and naming Divinia its future Matriarch. It was a decision that challenged the traditions of Rome itself.

From the moment she could walk, Divinia was raised not as a daughter destined for marriage, but as the son Rome expected. She was educated in strategy, politics, rhetoric, and warfare, trained alongside noble heirs, hardened in the mud pits of generals, and tempered in the streets among common folk. While born a Patrician, her upbringing allowed her to understand the lives of Rome's Plebeians as few nobles ever could.

Rather than choosing one side outright, she strives to bridge the widening gulf between Rome's Old Guard and its emerging aristocracy while remaining fiercely loyal to the common citizen. To her, nobility is measured not by birth, but by service, character, and sacrifice.

An outspoken reformer, Divinia advocates for a stronger and more united Rome, one where scholarship and service grant opportunity, where Plebeians may earn positions of influence, where women may inherit and lead without question, and where rigid class barriers no longer prevent capable Romans from shaping their own futures.

Divinia's story is one woven from deception and truth, hope and betrayal, love and ambition. It is a tale of masks worn so long that even she struggled to remember where the performance ended and the woman beneath began.

By 50 BC, Divinia had risen to the rank of Senator, securing her place among Rome's political elite. Yet while her colleagues saw a calculating noblewoman devoted to the Republic, her heart belonged elsewhere. Her affections lay with Lasonianus, Legate of the Second Legion, a Plebeian by birth, a soldier by trade, and the one man she could never openly claim.

Roman law forbade a union between Patrician and Plebeian. Two classes. Two lives. Two hearts bound by laws neither had written.

Divinia refused to accept those chains.

A master of political maneuvering, she became known as a woman of many faces, hiding one mask behind another. She cultivated alliances within the Senate, gradually earning the trust of Tribune Markus Varus Sol and several influential senators. Yet every alliance carried deception. They believed they were using Divinia for their own ambitions, while she quietly manipulated them in return, weaving herself ever deeper into the fabric of Roman politics.

Before power, however, came love.

Her first ambition was never a crown, but the right to marry Lasonianus openly. Working alongside Markus Sol, she championed reforms that expanded the rights of the Plebeian class, including legislation permitting marriages between Patricians and Plebeians. Against all expectations, the reforms passed.

At last, Divinia and Lasonianus were free to marry.

Their happiness would prove painfully brief.

Rebellion erupted across Rome. A mob of insurgents assaulted House Umbria, only to be crushed by the legions. Amid the chaos, however, one ambitious guard seized the opportunity to assassinate Monkeus Vinarius, patriarch of House Vinarius and Divinia's greatest rival within the Senate.

The murder ignited a far greater conflict.

The powerful Houses Vinarius and Cato, supported by multiple legions, rose in open revolt against the Senate.

Divinia stood beside Rome.

Fighting alongside the Senate, Markus Sol, and the loyal legions, she helped crush the rebellion. Yet victory carried an unforeseen consequence. Markus Sol emerged from the war as one of the Republic's most celebrated figures, his popularity eclipsing that of nearly every senator.

For Divinia, and for House Umbria, that made him dangerous.

Both she and her family began plotting against the Tribune. Their whispers, however, did not remain secret for long.

Learning of the conspiracy, Markus Sol struck first. Loyal soldiers arrested Divinia and brought her before the Senate to stand trial for treason. It appeared her political career, and perhaps her life, had come to an end.

Instead, the Senate voted six to four in her favor.

Divinia was declared not guilty.

Though spared execution, she was stripped of her Patrician status and publicly disgraced.

For Divinia, it was the final betrayal.

Years of compromise, negotiation, and political games had earned her nothing but humiliation. She abandoned diplomacy entirely.

Together with House Umbria, she hunted down Markus Sol and destroyed both him and the legion that remained loyal to him. With her greatest rival dead, Divinia marched into the Senate itself and proclaimed herself the rightful ruler of Rome.

Not everyone accepted her claim.
