Biography
Rubricus was raised in humble conditions, born into a plebeian household that had climbed just high enough to be comfortable, but not high enough to be secure. His father traded and conducted business well, spoke confidently, a bit arrogantly and stubborn at times, and carried himself like a man destined for greater things. Their family home was orderly, their table rarely empty, their name beginning to mean something in the district. It was the sort of life that suggested the gods were looking at them favorably.
Although he had never been much of a pious man to begin with, he still kept up appearances in public and did the household rites. Small offerings at home at the lararium, the proper libations before meals, etc. However, as his father's success and fortunes grew, so did his confidence and arrogance. Over time he began to treat the rites as obligations beneath him, as a waste of food, money and time. He had always viewed his success as a result of his own effort, and not as the result of superstitions like the blessing of the gods. But now? Now he slowly started expressing as such in private and even sometimes in public as he stopped keeping up appearances.
Where he once poured wine for the household gods, he now watered it down, joking that spirits could not taste the difference. Where he once offered small offerings to the local temple for continued fortune of business, family and health, he now started delaying it, then reducing the offerings, and then eventually, quietly, he stopped giving it all together.
