Beneminius Fulminii was a Roman religious leader and member of House Fulminii who served as Pontifex, the head of the clergy, until his death in 48 BC during The Fall of the Republic Event. After surviving a direct lightning strike, he became associated with rumours that he had been touched or favoured by Jupiter. Beneminius neither confirmed nor denied these claims, instead allowing the uncertainty surrounding the event to strengthen his family’s influence.

Appearance

Beneminius was a tall man with a composed, almost statuesque presence, as though carved from marble. Branching scars crossed his skin following the lightning strike he survived. Marking him as a man who had survived the unnatural. He did not attempt to conceal them, allowing the scars to serve as a reminder of the storm that changed his life. His expression was usually focused and unreadable. He spoke in a calm and measured voice that rarely rose, but nevertheless carried authority.

Personality

Calm, controlled, and deeply calculating, Beneminius was a man who rarely wasted words or movement, preferring to watch and take stock before acting. Strength, endurance, and results mattered to him more than sentiment.

Biography

Beneminius was born into the Fulminara, a minor Patrician family of modest influence. The family was known within Roma but held little power or respect compared with the greater houses. As such, his early life was defined by limited expectations. Growing up in the shadow of Rome’s more powerful families, Beneminius learned to watch carefully and find his place in a world largely shaped by greater names.

His position changed following a devastating storm. Lightning struck the estates, storehouses, and other holdings of several rival families that had long overshadowed the Fulminara. The pattern of destruction seemed unusually and terrifyingly precise, and by the end of the storm many of those families had lost much of what had supported their power.

The Fulminara estate was also burned and scarred, but it remained standing. Beneminius himself survived a direct lightning strike, which left branching scars across his body. Afterwards, some claimed that Jupiter had judged the Fulminara’s rivals and spared Beneminius. Others saw the event as no more than chance during a destructive storm.

Beneminius did not confirm or deny either interpretation. Instead, he took advantage of the position the storm had left him in. He secured abandoned holdings, rebuilt his family’s influence, and helped make the Fulminara one of the stronger families in the area. He also did little to discourage the stories about Jupiter’s favour, allowing others to draw their own conclusions.

Under Beneminius’s leadership, the Fulminara became the Fulminii and gained considerably more influence. The family’s rise came from Beneminius’s planning and ambition, but the story of the storm also became an important part of their reputation. Whether Jupiter had truly chosen him was never settled.
