Metella Cento was the Chief Blacksmith for House Lucretia up until her death. She assisted in Aemilia's Revolt, but was pardoned during the Lucretia Trials due to compliance and lack of knowledge of the Lucretia matriarch's plans.

Her relationship with Sinis Lucretia Tricipinus would eventually lead to her murder.

Biography

Abandoned by her parents prior to even her earliest memory, Metella spent most of her childhood wandering the streets of the capital, relying on sympathy and scraps to see the next day. From a very young age, Metella came to understand that, while poets and performers lined the streets of the capital singing to well-off patricians who had the luxury to speak of myths and gods, faith was not something everyone could afford. Praying for a morsel of bread or shelter would do her no good, and her pragmatic utilitarianism shaped her upbringing.

As she entered her late teens, a now-retired blacksmith, abandoned by his children who had stolen much of his retirement funds, would teach her his craft in his dying days in exchange for some stolen bread and peddled medicine. After her mentor eventually passed away, Aemilia Lucretia Tricipinus would come searching for her estate's old blacksmith after hearing of his plight, only to encounter his street-thief apprentice instead. In a moment of sympathy, perhaps, or seeing the girls' age being no older than her daughters, the matriarch would hire Metella in spite of her then-rudimentary skills, and take her back to the Lucretia estate.

From then on, Metella devoted herself to her blacksmithing work, both out of a dedication to the only stranger that had possibly resembled family, and to repay the unfathomable luck, or pity, Aemilia had offered her. Though she still did not believe in the goodwill of the gods, she would dedicate her faith in the saviour that had actually plucked her from her plight in the slums.

She grew closer to the other staff at the Lucretia estate, as well as the sisters that were raised there. All three sisters grew up treating Metella as more of a playmate peer than a servant. Even as the seasons passed, again and again, the comfort and peacefulness of the estate would never dull her drive to work. Many of the other staff would note her as being 'obsessed' with the forge, and Metella's skill would blossom fully until she took on apprentices and assistants of her own.

Notable Relationships

Sinis Lucretia Tricipinus

Sinis, in spite of her own feelings, was like a little sister to Metella (despite Sinis actually being older). She viewed her as the most eccentric of the Lucretia sisters, due to her, for some reason, always wanting to hide from Aemilia and Aesta in the blacksmiths' residences of all places. She'd learn to care for, and at points even pity the constant (or at least she was told) disappointment from Aemilia, and by extension Aesta, that Sinis would have to face, particularly in relation to the girl's lack of accomplishments and character.

She would teach Sinis, alongside the other junior blacksmiths, how to forge. Sinis was also strange in that she used the doors of the blacksmiths as practice for lockpicking, which is something Metella somehow managed to surpass her in skill in the future.

At the end of her life, Metella would be blind-sighted with a confession of love from Sinis. Drawn away to the amphitheatre out of nowhere, Metella had assumed the two might have a conversation about Aemilia's death, or the ongoing Lucretia trials. Instead, Sinis claimed to want to be with Metella, and that she had always yearned for her. Frazzled and shakened by feelings that she never expected, especially with Sinis' looming trial and then-presumed execution on the horizon, she had turned down her feelings, stating that she disagreed with Sinis' conviction to embrace death with her.

Driven by despair, Sinis would then slash Metella with a blade forged by her own hands, and torment her by leaving her head on a pike.

Aemilia Lucretia Tricipinus

Aemilia, to Metella, was someone that had saved her, so naturally she idolized her, with the degree of trust she had in the matriarch only compounding over the years. She would jump at any opportunity to be of use, learning to hone her craft of blacksmithing to manufacture whatever weapons and armour to the highest quality possible, without asking any questions, and not even thinking to suspect the intents of such an armament.

Even as Aemilia had slowly driven herself mad, she stayed loyal, taking over the mantle of Aesta Vilica to perform the duties of estate manager. She would view herself, honestly, as guilty as Aemilia in the plotting of overthrowing the Republic, despite her ignorance of the actual workings of the plot. Only after she had encountered and spoken to Cinna Lucretia Cento, Jippius Lupus, and Bibo as she was fleeing the Consul building did she finally realize that Aemilia had abandoned them.

And even so, she struggled to allow herself to betray her saviour, only finally rescinding her will after a confrontation with Judge Rubricus Fulgens, acquiescing with a betrayal of will that still ate away at her until her death.

Jestius Cento

Metella's relationship with Jestius Cento would be one forged by circumstance entirely. Due to the many mishaps of the Treasury, the two had met many times with Metella bickering about not receiving her pay from administration for the sets of armour and tools she had provided to the state.

However, during Aemilia's Revolt when Jestius had been held hostage, as well as his affinity to Cinna Lucretia Cento whom Metella felt protective over, naturally, the two would grow a lot closer, to the point where Jestius, out of both genuine care for Metella and responsibility, would adopt Metella into the Cento family. As the months passed, however, Metella would feel burdened in her relationship with Jestius, and gradually keep her distance again, with the two never truly rekindling their friendship up until Metella's murder.
